“What has happened in the post-9/11 world to Muslims has done more damage to the Muslim psyche than anything else. The feelings of rage I had for myself are tethered to the feeling of being unwanted. Every person of color has felt this to some extent — the feeling of being seen as completely wrong, and being so terrified that at any moment someone might disclose to you how ugly, or worthless, you really are. In these circumstances we’ve whitewashed ourselves in the hope of being accepted.
In subliminal (and sometimes blatant) ways we are taught that white is good, white is beautiful, white is better — so we customise ourselves to appease the oppressor. We believe in the oppressor’s language against us so wholeheartedly, and yes, we want to change, we want to be like them.”
